Count Down to My London Trip!!!

Only 29 days until I leave for my trip to London. I'm spending New Years and my birthday in England, and I cant wait! Not much else going on at this point, as I havent had alot of time for drawing. In fact right after I finish this post I will be diving right into something new. In light of my trip to England I found it fitting to include a picture I drew of British actress and pop star Billie Piper.

In the planning stages of a move...

I have always wanted to move to London UK, and at this rate it looks like my time in Calgary is coming to an end. I will be in London for New Years this year and will be determining if I can make a go of it out there. The wheels are in motion for the next step in my life, and I'm terrified and excited at the same time. I guess its time for me to move on, take the step and let the universe take care of me for a bit here. I need to be in a place where I'm constantly inspired and surrounded by others who want to create. London seems like that place, and I hope I'm right!

I wouldnt end this post without some sort of picture for you so here's a picture of my studio, with the latest drawing in progress..

Whats new this week!?

I have had a relatively slow weak for drawing, but have managed to put up one thing I'm kinda happy with.

I actually just got in from a night out with some former work colleges (and a bunch of people I've never met) and decided to write. I'm not really sure what to put. I guess its just rant on an idea forming for a piece on the UN. The fact that all these meetings were going on this week, but I'm pretty sure the same problems are out there. I wanna believe the UN is the proper way to go for things like poverty and peace, but I feel like maybe its broken! Im not saying I have the solution, but I feel that there needs to be one before it can be an effective institution with teeth.

Narnia

When I was finishing my second year of college, I asked one of my instructors what I should work on over the summer. (I was kind of a keener) He replied that I find something (or someone) to draw, and not stop drawing it until i saw him next. Obviously I drew other stuff but I probably drew Susan from the Chronicles of Narnia Movie (2005 version) about 100 times over the next 4 months. Ironically in this rendition Lucy looks better than Susan, even after all that practice.

some fun portraits and looking for more...

The last few days I have been just drawing things I really used to love. I of course still do, but I was seriously obsessed with these two for a long time.... OK I still am and it was really nice to give them another shot. Im gonna continue to visit my past obsessions for a while and see what kind of ideas i can actually generate for a lager piece.

A fun project for a friend!

3 of my former work buddies are.. shall we say,  an odd little group! Two of them are moving, one to Europe the other to San Fransisco. I was asked to draw up a caricature of them as a sort of going away present for all concerned. Here's what I have.

..After a little break!

So I had a busy July, I was in a wedding, our show and various other things going on. This week my computer crapped out, and if any of you can guess this plays havoc for my being able to draw. I have also figured out what I'm going to be for halloween, and I'm really excited about this one. Jess and I have had a party for the past two years and this 3rd annual is gonna be our best yet.more to come on the Halloween stuff and a few more pics from last month (once my computer is back up... And thank goodness for backing up!)

Something a Bit Different...

Here's something I'm working on which is a bit more controversial. It's kind of a commentary on recent events in Europe. It's not done but this is more or less the direction I'm going with it!

Some Autographs...

On Wednesday March 24th, I met the Canadian Women's Curling Team. They were at Fats Bar and Grill, signing autographs for their fans. By the time the closing ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics started I was drawing a picture of Cheryl Bernard In hopes of one day giving it to her... Well I gave her my portrait (framed) and had her sign another for me, plus I got another card signed by all of them. It was really cool to meet them.. congratulations once again!

Farewell To One of the Best

Eugene Ouchi has been my friend and mentor for 30 years... he passed away on March 7, 2010.

Since I was 5 years old he’s been my hockey coach, my mentor, my teacher and most important, my friend! He told me recently that the reason he loved being all of these things is because he was learning in an equal capacity to his students and players. “Always try to learn something in everything you do!”

My very first memory of Eugene was him teaching me how to skate... He’d tell us to “really dig in...look at the spot were you’re going and don't stop til you get there.” ... He’d also noticed my knack for drawing and encouraged me to follow it. Over the years that followed, he always asked how the art was going... suggesting I take it to a different level. Finally I decided to go to ACAD and told him the first chance I could. He smiled... and asked me if I remembered that first lesson he taught me in hockey? Because it applied to my school work at ACAD... In order to be successful I needed to “dig in... Picture that goal line and don't stop til I get there.”
Eugene  has taught me how to strive for my goals, and have fun doing it.  I am so lucky to have him in my life.

I will never forget you Eugene as long as I’m learning!
